Rich in history, architecture, art and culture, Lecce has been defined as “Florence of the South” because of its wonderful monuments in Baroque style, the most outstanding feature of the city.
Developed in the seventeenth-century under the Spanish domination, this style is peculiar for the luxurious decorations in Leccese stone. As a result, most of Lecce’s artistic heritage is characterized by refined ornaments, which represent the meticulous work made by great craftsmen.
The city is also regarded as the main cultural centre of Apulia thanks to its great museums, theaters, squares, churches, castle, university, trattorias, fun festivals and a thriving nightlife as well.
Lecce is surely one of the best southern Italian cities to visit.
